NEW UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC HITMAKER K'JON DELIVERS DEBUT ALBUM ‘I GET AROUND' ON AUGUST 4
Smash Debut Hit "On The Ocean" Is #1 Single At Urban AC Radio, Greatest Gainer At Both Mediabase, BDS Published Charts
New York, NY - June 10, 2009 - Gettin' around?- no matter how you slice it, Universal Republic newcomer K'Jon has already arrived. He's just making it official on August 4, delivering his aptly titled debut album, I GET AROUND to stores and online platforms in time for summer, having been more than adequately introduced to urban music fans this past spring thanks to the album's soaring first single," On The Ocean," which has become a radio/club classic. The magnetic hit sizzled on the nightlife grid for months as a popular ‘steppers' hit in ‘tastemaker' cities like Chicago before rocketing last week to the top spot on the Urban AC radio chart. The inspirational song has also become the #1 Greatest Gainer at both the Mediabase and BDS charts.
Often compared to stylish hit makers such as Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke, the talented K'Jon kept the production in-house on his debut effort, with the Detroit native guiding production and writing chores on a kaleidoscope of diverse songs that includes the passionate radio hit, as well as the mesmerizing "This Time," the cool flow of "After The Clubs," and some dynamo ballads - including the sweeping "Ill Never Forget," among others. Says K'Jon: "The goal with this album was to make a record that covered a lot of emotional territory - the kind of record you would be able to listen to from beginning to end and want to hear again." The imaginative songwriter even laid down a track that plays with the superhero mystique on the clever "Fly Away."
But the Detroit native's rise to stardom hasn't been a smooth trajectory all the way. He earned his stripes in the motor city's competitive underground urban music scene, launching various indie collaborations until his breakout 2004 cameo on the electric 2 Fast 2 Furioussoundtrack with the hit "Miami." Soon, he was opening for established stars such as Ludacris, even collaborating with the talented rapper - and subsequently - many other sought-after industry song-makers, like super-producers Cool & Dre, Ginuwine, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, and others.
Known for his fearlessness when delving into multiple genres of music, including soul, hip hop and R&B, K'Jon's debut album reflects the same tenacity, just as his first hit single would come to separate him from the rest of the pack at one of the most crucial cross-roads of his career. "It was at a time when I was still trying to establish my identity," he says. "I wrote the song literally thinking the music industry is kind of like bobbing in the ocean. How we all wonder if and when our ship is going to come in." Rather than deliver the song to another established star, the intuitive artist decided to keep it as his own signature calling card, creating one of the most popular urban music hits of the year.
Wayna - 'Higher Ground' 5 out of 5 discs! - TOP SHELF RATING
Wayna had an uphill battle in front of her considering she was a new artist that was entering the declining music industry. Despite it all, the songstress managed to put together one of the best albums to be released last year. So it was no surprise, at least for me, when Wayna became a Grammy-nominated singer with her very first album Higher Ground. Each song on the album flows right into the next, placing the listener on a magic carpet ride through Wayna's soul. She touches on engaging issues like police brutality ("Billy Club"), workplace b.s. ("Office Politics"), and domestic abuse ("My Love"). Wayna gets her point across in each of the songs in a more subtle, quaint manner rather than beating it down your throat like countless other artists who've attempted to spread awareness on the issues. Her exquisite rendition of Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" is a breath of fresh air that certainly does the original song justice. The humorous "Mr. Duracell" is an album standout, along with "Close 2 U" featuring Kenn Starr. If you haven't heard Higher Ground, then you surely are missing out on a musical gem. Wayna may not have won a Grammy, but Higher Ground is a winner when it comes to real quality R&B music.

Ain't Misbehavin' starring Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis
Okay, for all you die-hard musical lovers out there...this is the one to see. Having been on tour since mid-November, the star-studded cast of Ain't Misbehavin' rolled through Milwaukee this weekend and brought the house to its feet. I'm not big on musicals, but my wife really wanted to see this production. So after much contemplation, I finally broke down and dropped the cash for the play. And boy was it 'Jumpin'! Over 2 hours of stellar singing...no story, no drama, no filler.
From song to song, each performer did what they came to do...sing their hearts out. Having been on the road for the past six months, you would think that they would be sick of singing the same songs day in and day out. If that were true, you surely didn't get that vibe from the performers. Song highlights have to be Ruben's solo rendition of "Your Feet's Too Big," Trenyce Cobbins' hilarious character portrayal during "The Ladies Who Sing With The Band," and the highly-entertaining "Cash For Your Trash" with Frenchie Davis. The other two performers had great moments as well, especially Arthur A. Marks coercing of an audience member to take a drag from the 'reefa' during "The Viper's Drag" and Patrice Covington's gitty giggle when the spotlight 'squeezed' her during the song "Squeeze Me." Of course, the band is equally entertaining since they provide all of the music for the production. Ain't Misbehavin' is truly remarkable!
